You’re Steele The One For Me – Remington Steele Episode Summary 1.8

Laura Holt geishaSynopsis: A Japanese young man enlists the help of the Remington Steele detective agency to search for his missing brother. Unfortunately, Laura Holt learns that he had already died due to a fatal car accident. To appease the bereaved young man who is unconvinced of his brother’s unexpected death, Remington Steele agrees to dig deeper into the case. Their investigation leads them in a web of deception that involves the Yakuza.

Episode Summary: Laura Holt (Stephanie Zimbalist) accompanies a young Japanese gentleman at a funeral of his departed elderly brother. Soon after, Remington Steele (Pierce Brosnan) arrives to console Laura, thinking that she was the one who lost a loved one. Truth of the matter is the young Japanese gentleman, Mike Ito had sought the help of the detective agency to look for his missing brother. Apparently, the now departed brother, Kenji Ito, had called the young man to announce his arrival at the airport. However, when Mike came to pick him up, he had already gone missing. Laura’s investigation led her to the Japanese temple where the man’s funeral was already underway. According to the police report, the man did not wait for the pedestrian light, ran across traffic on busy Temple Street where he was then hit by a car, which caused his demise. Grieving Mike Ito could not believe the unexpected death of his brother, and has convinced himself that what happened to him was no accident despite not having anything that would suggest otherwise.  Continue reading...

Remington Steele, to appease the distraught young man, had promised him that they would further investigate. The figurehead’s rather unsolicited involvement on the case he knows very little about angers Laura Holt, and their dispute reaches the office. The arrival of Murphy Michaels who had brought a copy of the police report on Kenji Ito’s accident disrupts their quarreling. However, it was only a temporary distraction. Mr. Steele pulls Laura to his office where they continue their argument. The man who had assumed the identity of Remington Steele was already feeling useless, and growing weary of being told that he only functions best in a purely advisory capacity. Much to Laura’s surprise, the man instead of just running out on the agency actually wants to be part of it, but now as a real detective. Seeing Mr. Steele’s genuine intentions, Laura Holt agrees to train the man who calls himself Remington Steele.

The accidental death or murder of Kenji Ito becomes his first case. Having agreed to dig deeper in the case despite her belief that there was no foul play, Laura Holt with Mr. Steele further investigates. For his first lesson, the two go over the facts to find out anything amiss. Laura points out several. Knowing that Mike Ito is the only relative of Kenji in Los Angeles, she begins to wonder who might have claimed the body from the authorities given that Mike only knew of his brother’s death the day of the funeral. Other troubling questions would be who had arranged the funeral, who are three people who had come to pay their respects to the deceased, and how are they connected to Kenji Ito.

In the hopes of finding answers, the two visit the driver who had accidentally run over the Japanese gentleman. Unfortunately, the man had also gone missing, and his neighbors are too afraid to be involved. However, Ms. Holt had tricked a Japanese woman into spending a few moments of her time to talk to her only the woman does not speak a word of English. While she struggles to question her, Remington Steele notices an elderly Japanese man calling for him. The student becomes the teacher when Laura Holt ends up with nothing from the old woman, and Mr. Steele learns important facts from the old man who was more than willing to shed some light.

Swallowing her embarrassment, Laura goes with Mr. Steele to the morgue where Mr. Hamada’s body rests. Like Kenji Ito, his death was also ruled accidental despite the suspicious manner that had caused it. The coroner’s office reported a broken neck brought upon by a refrigerator door. As the two dig deeper into the case, the more and more their discoveries reinforce Mike Ito’s claim of murder. However, seeing that the young man is still upset at his brother’s unfortunate fate, Laura found it best not to support his belief just yet. Instead, they present him with a file they put together on his brother. This upsets the young man even more.

In an attempt to learn the purpose of Kenji Ito’s visit, Laura decided to contact his printing company. What she found was that it does not exist. Mike Ito is in disbelief at what she had uncovered upon learning that his brother who funded the Japanese restaurant he now owns had been using money from questionable sources. His anger comes from having the investigation turn into uncovering dirt on his brother whom he holds in high regard than finding the man’s killer. Given the disconcerting new facts they discovered, Laura worries that their client might be withholding information. The routine investigation soon turns sour when one of the men in Kenji Ito’s funeral turns up, and threatens Ms. Holt. She manages to put on a brave face despite the threats that Major Winslow Craddock had slung at her. From what she could gather from the rather hazy conversation she had with the man, Major Winslow Craddock is using Kenji Ito to lead him to the Palace of Heaven.

With no leads to what the Palace of Heaven might be Remington Steele turns to his breadth of knowledge in classic cinema for answers. However, this time the movie that would provide him the clues to solve the murder is yet to be determined, although “The Yakuza” might have been a good guess given that Craddock had referred to the deceased as a gunrunner, and had warned Ms. Holt at losing a finger. Sensing the danger that the supposed accidental case would bring, Bernice pleads her boss to drop the case. Unfortunately, Laura’s dedication to her client cannot be deterred, and she decides to pursue the case even if it means losing a finger.

Sometimes to find the answer all you have to do is ask. This is just what Mr. Steele did, and he found what and where the Palace of Heaven is by merely calling directory assistance. The Palace of Heaven, he found, is a movie theater playing Japanese movies. He arrives at the movie house, and finds the woman who was at Kenji Ito’s funeral. Sensing that she is being followed, the woman leaves. He follows the oriental lady unbeknownst to him that Murphy adhering to Laura’s description of the woman at the funeral had done the same. However, Murphy who was not expecting Mr. Steele thought him to be a stalker. He attacks him, and becomes surprised at learning his identity. Mr. Steele explains his presence as Murphy does the same, but the time they lost doing so had cost them their lead.

Luck just seems to fall on Remington Steele’s lap. Leaving Murphy who had decided to check-in with the office, he exits through the backdoor where the oriental lady points a gun at him. His luck comes with having the opportunity to question the woman despite her aiming to shoot. Truth be told, the woman is more afraid of him than he is with her. She mistakes him to be a Yakuza as Kenji Ito also was. Slowly, Mr. Steele gains the confidence of the terrified woman as he supplies her with bits of information about Kenji with regard to him having a brother, and the woman reciprocates by telling him that it is she who claimed the body, and arranged the funeral of her departed lover. Unfortunately, Remington Steele makes the mistake of mentioning The Palace of Heaven, and this frightens the woman even more causing her to flee. So it appears that there is more to The Palace of Heaven than a mere Asian movie house. What it really is, is yet to be discovered.

It was Laura Holt whom Murphy had called after the incident with Remington Steele. She arrives at the movie theater to meet him, and is met with a barrage of complaints against the figurehead eager to do real detective work. Laura who always had a soft spot for Mr. Steele ignores her associate’s grievances. In fact, she becomes even more impressed at her student when he comes running with news about finding the oriental girl, and her connection to Kenji Ito. His information regarding the woman claiming the body would have amazed Laura even more if not for the contradicting fact she found. According to the coroner, the person who claimed Kenji Ito’s body from the morgue was a Japanese man. Murphy senses that there is something obviously fishy about the real identity of who claimed the body, and Laura learning that Mike Ito was the one who signed the claim form just added more confusion to the already baffling case.

Laura, Mr. Steele and Murphy drive to Mike Ito’s restaurant to straighten out matters with him, but they are too late. They watch as Japanese men take their client by force, and drive away with him. The three return to their office to regroup only to find Bernice aggravated by what seemed to be a prank caller. The man had been calling incessantly, but had only been repeating the same line, “You’re still the one for me”. A few seconds later, the man makes another call, but this time Mr. Steele took it upon himself to handle it. Just as Bernice had said, the man had said the same line only it really was “You’re Steele?”, and as soon as Mr. Steele had confirmed, he says “The one for me.” Apparently, the man who could barely speak English had been instructed to deliver a message only to Remington Steele. It was an address where they expect him to be.

Laura and Mr. Steele make their way to the said address, but are accosted in an alley by the same man who made the call, and the goons who abducted Mike Ito. Blindfolded the men lead the two up a building whose interior is that of a Japanese house. The oriental lady who had pretended to be Kenji Ito’s bereaved lover leads them to Mr. Tenaka. Remington Steele was made a fool, thinking he was getting information from the woman when it was her who was doing the questioning. He regrets having made the mistake that had resulted to Mike’s abduction. And so, Mr. Steele recognizes the wisdom that comes from experience. He believes that Laura Holt would not have made the same mistake.

Mr. Tenaka, the head of the Yakuza, meets with them. According to him, Kenji Ito was a free agent working for the Yakuza who was then captured by the US intelligence agency. His sudden release alarmed Mr. Tenaka, and therefore decided to question him on what had transpired. Unfortunately, Kenji Ito escaped before he could even do so, and he took with him The Palace of Heaven. Learning that Mike Ito is ignorant of his brother’s work, and more so of The Palace of Heaven, Tenaka knowing the reputation of the great Remington Steele assigns him the unfortunate task of finding it, and uses Mike as ransom.

Having not a clue of what The Palace of Heaven is much more where to find it, Laura and her team resorts to desperate measures. Their unexpected and daring plan is to infiltrate Tenaka’s headquarters in the hope of successfully escaping with Mike Ito. After Murphy had taken care of the security guard looking after one of the back doors, Mr. Steele and Laura Holt sneak inside the building. Laura Holt dressed as a geisha serves the men who are holding their client hostage with drugged sake. Her cover had almost failed when one of the men had started ordering her in Japanese. Luckily, Mike who had recognized Laura had yelled the same order, but in English just so she would understand. A couple of drinks later, two of the guards had fallen asleep, but one remains awake. Before the last man standing could even suspect what was going on, Remington Steele bursts through the paper walls, and attacks the man. With the help of Mike and Laura who had smashed a pot on the man’s head, the three begin their great escape.

The three returns to the office to celebrate their good fortune, but soon after hears an intruder. Fortunately, it was only the coroner Mr. Dickerson whom they had called to identify Mike as the man who claimed Kenji Ito’s body. Mr. Dickerson declares that the person in front of him is not the one who actually claimed the body, but identifies it to be Kenji. Apparently, the corpse of the man who had the fatal accident was beyond recognition, but the picture of his brother that Mike had with him helped Mr. Dickerson provide a positive ID on the claimant. The added twist could also be the lead that they are hoping to find. Things start to fall into place, and Mr. Steele enlightened with their new discovery had finally found the right movie to help them with the case; it being “The Third Man”.

However, Laura Holt does not need the aid of a classic film to know where Kenji Ito might be hiding. The four rushes to the temple where the supposed funeral for Kenji took place. With Murphy as their lookout, Mr. Steele, Laura and Mike enter the temple only to find the dead body of Major Winslow Craddock. Kenji Ito emerges from the back of the altar. He confesses the shameful truth to his brother that he had all along been living a double life, and his only respite is to provide Mike a life away from him, and free of shame. He did not count on his brother who had revered him to go finding answers given his untimely death. Kenji Ito makes it known of having faked his own death after Major Winslow Craddock released him hoping that he would lead him directly to the Yakuza.

Craddock had spread rumors that Kenji had divulged information about the organization he had been working for to alarm Tenaka whom he knew would surely go after a snitch. With the US intelligence, and the Yakuza after him, he decided to steal the computer code that has all the information on the Yakuza -- The Palace of Heaven. Kenji was to trade The Palace of Heaven for his freedom, but he realized that Tenaka’s men was already on to him as soon as he reached American soil.

However, he found a means to escape. After winning the struggle against one of Tenaka’s men whom he pushed in front of a moving car, Kenji had just found his way out by planting his identification on the body of the man whose face was damaged beyond recognition. Unfortunately, the involvement of the great Remington Steele had stirred up the suspicion of the Yakuza. To ensure his brother’s safety, Kenji hands Mr. Steele The Palace of Heaven. In addition, he had also killed Major Winslow Braddock to ensure Tenaka that he had not talked, and that their organization’s secret is safe.

With the truth out, Kenji Ito spends a few minutes of freedom with his brother before the police arrest him for the murder of Major Winslow Craddock. Then again, some facts still remain a blur with Remington Steele. Leave it to Laura Holt to straighten out the details over sushi, a dish that Mr. Steele has yet to have a taste for. According to her, Kenji Ito used the body of the Yakuza whom he had killed to take his place at the funeral. The driver, Mr. Hamada who had supposedly hit Kenji was only an unfortunate casualty, since Major Craddock had thought him to be a Yakuza as well, and had therefore killed him. With all things now clear as crystal, Laura ends Remington Steele’s training with him eating at least one of the sushi served. Unfortunately, raw octopus is just too much for him to handle, which leads him to resume his role of a mere front man.

Etched in Steele – Remington Steele Episode Summary 1.7

Remington Steele, Laura Holt listen to romance novelSynopsis: Mitchell Knight, the drunken husband of the famous romance novelist Charlotte Knight reveals to Remington Steele and Laura Holt that his wife had written on her new book how she plans to kill him. It was a claim that quickly came true as his body came falling down from the thirty-fifth floor balcony of his house. Everybody had dismissed the fatal fall as an accident, all except Laura Holt. She believes that the best-selling author Charlotte Knight had murdered her husband.

Episode Summary: Mitchell Knight’s eyes fill with worry and fear after reading his wife’s new manuscript. He calls to her, as she lays on the bed undaunted, taking pleasure at her husband’s apparent trepidation. Meanwhile, Bernice Foxe has worries of her own; the Remington Steele Detective agency has not a single case for a week. What is even more distressing is her boss’ nonchalant reaction. Laura Holt (Stephanie Zimbalist) knows very well that the holiday season has always put a damper on their business. It is something that is beyond her control. However, there is another thing or rather person who seems to have slipped from her grasp – Remington Steele (Pierce Brosnan). Laura almost chokes from her coffee at the sight of a picture of him on the newspaper. Apparently, the famous sleuth has been running around town attending social events. Moreover, he had already talked to linchpin publisher Russell Forsyth about a book on Remington Steele’s ten most famous cases. News of this infuriates Ms. Holt, and for good reason. The man whom everybody knows as Remington Steele is a fake. He is merely playing a role in Laura Holt’s scheme. This is a fact that she so tries very hard to inculcate on the charlatan’s head. Truth is the man has not even worked on ten cases, which adds complication to the task he agreed to take on. Laura orders him to call the publisher and reject the deal, but ends up going to the publisher’s party with him.   Continue reading...

The party is a celebration of the completion of Charlotte Knight’s new manuscript. Charlotte Knight is a famous romance novelist known for her erotic writing that seems to be all too familiar with Laura Holt who to avoid embarrassment quickly explains to Mr. Steele that her knowledge of her work came only from news she heard. However, her excuse was equally quickly invalidated after meeting Charlotte’s husband. Her marked enthusiasm at meeting the husband of the famous novelist had revealed that she actually had read all of her sizzling romance books. Laura’s delight is matched by the intoxicated Mr. Knight’s interest at speaking with the two private investigators. He tells them that the first two books that his wife wrote are not completely a work of fiction as they were based on their marriage. This is why the most recent manuscript troubles him, since it is about a woman who throws her husband off a thirty-fifth floor balcony. However, having heard the story from a man who had one too many drinks provided little ground for the two private investigators to believe anything that he had said. In addition, the man is not too sure about hiring them either as he comes to realize that his anxiety might just be a simple case of paranoia. They all learn the fatal truth moments later when the body of Mitchell Knight comes flying off the balcony of his thirty-fifth floor unit.

Laura Holt smells murder. Having learned that Charlotte Knight’s new manuscript has nothing about a wife murdering a husband, Laura believes that Charlotte had intentionally written that part only for her husband to read. It was meant to drive him mad enough for him to turn to his favored poison – alcohol. The plan worked, Mitchell Knight paraded at the party drunk as a skunk. It was a condition Charlotte intended for everyone to see, such that no one would ever suspect murder. However, she did not count on Laura Holt attending the party, or her husband revealing to her and Mr. Steele the missing murder scene.

Mr. Steele, however, remains convinced that there is no murder. With foot still aching, all thanks to Laura stomping on it to prevent him from canceling the book deal she originally wanted him to reject, Mr. Steele marches on to prove that there is no death scene thus no murder. He starts his quest with a chat with the flirtatious Charlotte Knight who acts far from a grieving wife. He comes under the pretense of a man seeking advice from an author on how to write. His visit was a success, well only for him since the woman had thought that he had come to help her with her “research”. If the woman had gotten what she wanted, Mr. Steele would have been another character in her next provocative novel.

Later that night, Mr. Steele and Ms. Holt spend the evening listening to Charlotte’s dictations. It was a task that soon became very uncomfortable for the two. However, listening to chapters upon chapters of sizzling romance had taken its toll, but not in the way that most would have yearned, since Mr. Steele and Laura only ended up falling asleep. Laura wakes up to the sound of a man on the tape recorder, a sound she first thought that was a result of a device in need of batteries, but it was not. The sound is the voice of Mitchell Knight.

The next morning, Mr. Steele and Ms. Holt waste no time to confront Charlotte Knight in the presence of her agent, her publisher, and her gigolo. Russell Forsyth does not even bother denying the truth that Mitchell Knight was the writer. However, he reveals that it was Charlotte that made him a success. In fact, when Mr. Forsyth first read Mitchell’s manuscript he threw it away. It was Charlotte’s persistence that made him change his mind. The woman, though not a writer, has the natural ability to smooth talk anyone into appreciating literature that borders on pornography. With the cat out of the bag, everyone who knows the secret pleads Mr. Steele and Ms. Holt that they keep it as that – a secret. The two who have a deep, dark secret of their own, and therefore share the same predicament as they do, assures them of their full cooperation.

Unfortunately, Laura Holt still is convinced that Mitchell Knight was murdered. This troubles Mr. Steele greatly. He confronts Laura to tell her that she is a workaholic, and that the lack of any other cases to solve has caused her to call an accident a murder. Moreover, he supposes that she only buries herself with work so that she would not have any time to become close with anyone. Laura is using work as a wall to guard her from intimacy. It appears that Mr. Steele has figured her out all too well, and all too soon. This scared Laura Holt, but not as much as Mr. Steele’s proposition that she go away with him. Moreover, Mr. Steele is fast becoming the man she wants him to be. This she discovers when he starts talking about a rudiment in private investigation that he learned from her. That is, a case only becomes one if there is an occurrence that remains unexplained. This may be true for anyone who believes that Mitchell Knight drunk, as he was that night only fell off the balcony by accident. Unfortunately, Laura is not one of those people.

Laura Holt finds it hard to believe that Mr. Knight would have simply tripped over a three-foot high balcony. To clear her mind, she pays a visit to the scene of the supposed murder, and to talk to her prime suspect Charlotte Knight. Unfortunately, Charlotte is not at home, but her gigolo Tony Dinaldo was kind enough to let her look around. She learns that Tony is not really a gigolo. He claims that he considers Charlotte as a mentor. The young man is in fact a Harvard educated writer who himself is working on a book of his own. Seeing that Laura is still preoccupied with the mystery, Tony makes her see what no one else has considered, and that is Mitchell Knight committed suicide. He explains that the man has been living behind the shadow of his famous wife whose success is born out of his writing, which is a fact that the adoring public did not know. Laura Holt knows very well the feeling, and it did not take her too long to be convinced that the man had jumped to his death.

Later that night, Laura lies on her couch free of the mystery that preoccupied her mind. However, Mr. Steele also had a change of heart. Now, he is the one convinced that Mitchell Knight was murdered. This after he heard a tape where Mr. Knight encounters a writer’s block. He attributes the man’s situation to the movie The Shining, and had come to believe that the ghostwriter had a ghostwriter. This may be the case, but Laura argues that there is no motive, since all who knew the secret stand to gain nothing from his death. Mr. Steele stands firm in his belief, and attests that whoever wrote the third book is the killer.

With no motive, and only Mr. Steele’s instincts to support them, Laura Holt and Remington Steele set out to unmask the murderer. It is an undertaking that boggles Ms. Holt. She wonders how the man would get his three suspects all in one room. The answer comes to her as a surprise, Mr. Steele had asked Russell Forsyth to hold a party announcing that Remington Steele had agreed to write his very first book for the Forsyth publishing company. The three suspects are all in attendance not to mention all the ones who came for the free cocktails. With all eyes on him, vain Mr. Steele takes the opportunity to reveal the murderer in front of an audience. He tells everybody the secret that the publishing company has been keeping, and that a ghostwriter was responsible for all the popular sensual books that everybody thought Charlotte Knight wrote. Having said that, Mr. Steele accuses Charlotte to be the killer. The woman confesses that she did not write any of the books, and that she also did not murder her husband. Having risked her career to prove her innocence, Mr. Steele dismisses her as a suspect, and turns to the next one, Charlotte’s agent Dennis Baker. Mr. Steele argues that Mr. Baker, the person who negotiated the film and paperback deals for the third book was also the one who wrote it. However, Mr. Baker reveals that he did not negotiate the deal on the third book, because he knew that Mitchell Knight did not write it, and he certainly did not author it. Mr. Steele then points to his last suspect – Russell Forsyth. He claims that Mr. Knight threatened to divulge the publishing company’s secret, which forced him to murder the ghostwriter, and write the book himself. However, his allegation far-fetched as it already is is further rebuffed when Mr. Forsyth declares that the day before Mitchell Knight died he actually signed a three-book deal under his wife’s name. With no more suspects to accuse, and his reputation on the line, Remington Steele does what he does best – turn to Laura Holt for help. Unfortunately, Laura too does not know who the murderer is. To save himself, Mr. Steele evades further embarrassment by declaring that the ending to the case he worked all night to build up cannot be divulged that evening, and that they would have to read his book to discover who the killer is.

With his ego bruised, Remington Steele sulks at a corner as the guests make their way out the door. Little did he know, Laura Holt had already solved the mystery. With the guests gone, Remington Steele and Laura Holt with the three previous suspects enter the study where Tony Dinaldo is typing frantically. They arrive under the guise of Mr. Forsyth having to type final clauses into a book contract. Not only did they disrupt the man trying to meet a deadline, they too had to ask him to type the memo for them. Tony, a confessed fast typist, someone who could type sixty-five words per minute types away. This is when Laura lays on the table the simple fact that they overlooked. The missing murder scene that Mitchell Knight had described to them was according to him neatly typed on the manuscript. It was not dictated on a tape, a device that he is known to use in place of a typewriter. Sure that confessing as the ghostwriter’s ghostwriter would not provide them enough cause to prove him to be the murderer, Tony Dinaldo admits that he indeed wrote the third book. It was a solution that the Knights, Forsyth, and Baker agreed to given the deadline they had for the launching of the new book. Tony did not have a problem keeping this secret, since he claims to be a serious writer, and the public learning of him writing some sleazy novel would blemish a respectable reputation he has yet to have. It is for this very reason that Tony Dinaldo killed Mitchell Knight. Knight planned to reveal at the party that Tony had written the third book. This would have been an announcement that would have killed his career before it even took off. And so there is the motive, but Remington Steele and Laura Holt has yet to present proof. Luckily, Tony has yet to replace the murder scene he had typed on the original manuscript. It is for this reason that he had been laboring all night in front of the typewriter. Unlucky for him a copy of the original manuscript is at the hands of Russell Forsyth who has yet to read it. He runs to the door in the hopes of destroying the single piece of evidence in existence, but the foot of Remington Steele dashed his only chance of getting away with murder. And so, Mr. Steele yet again wounds up on the newspaper. It was a victory he intends to take in with satisfaction, but not as much as his triumph at converting Laura Holt into a slacker even just for a day.

Steele Belted – Remington Steele Episode Summary 1.6

Remington Steele, Laura Holt, Murphy Michaels find James Rubio's corpseSynopsis: Remington Steele’s apartment has been ransacked by an intruder looking for information related to the case Laura Holt and Murphy Michaels are working on. The man is looking for a bill of sale that would prove their client’s innocence. Upon learning that Ms. Holt has become involved with their client’s lawyer, Mr. Steele makes him his prime suspect, and sets out to prove him so.

Episode Summary: A scruffy, bearded man ransacks the house of Remington Steele (Pierce Brosnan) just before he arrives home with his date. Their cheerful laughter signaled their arrival, giving the intruder enough time to escape. Mr. Steele opens the door of his apartment to find his house in complete disarray. Interestingly, his date does not appear troubled despite the disconcerting appearance of his apartment. As Mr. Steele tries to see if the intruder is still in the premises, the woman tries her best to salvage the evening with an insinuation that they ignore the mess, and continue with what they intended to do that night. However, Mr. Steele wants to get to the bottom of things especially after seeing a man by the lamppost waving at him. Quickly, he runs downstairs to where the man is standing, but finds him no longer there. The man had left after seeing the intruder escape through the fire escape.   Continue reading...

The following morning, Mr. Steele wastes no time to talk to Ms. Holt, but is met by a mob of clients. With a quick statement of him attending to their needs, he manages to usher them to his office, while he has a little chat with Ms. Holt. Mr. Steele finds her in her office on the phone with Murphy discussing a case. Impatient, he tries to distract the woman with his whistling, and was successful. As soon as Ms. Holt hangs up the phone, he informs her of the ransacking of his apartment. Learning that the intruder did not steal any of his possessions, he was sure that the man only wanted a piece of information he thought he has. Laura dismisses Mr. Steele’s supposition, thinking that it could not have anything to do with a case they are working on, and that it might only be someone from his past or even just a jealous husband. Ms. Holt leaves Mr. Steele to meet with a client.

Mr. Steele returns to his office forgetting that the mob of clients is in there waiting for him. With a quick excuse of him being summoned by the police commissioner, the clients leave. Still convinced that the intruder is after a file Laura has, he tries to trick Ms. Foxe to give him a spare key to the case file cabinets attesting that he had misplaced his. Knowing full well that he is merely a figurehead, she dismisses his request, and instead urges him to take the phone call from a man who insists on only speaking to Remington Steele. He takes the call, and Ms. Foxe leaves him be. The man on the other line is Waldo Church, the one who was standing by the lamppost. Mr. Steele learns that Rubio, the man who ransacked his apartment, was after the bill of sale that would prove that a man named Shapiro is innocent. What Rubio just found at is that Waldo Church still has the bill of sale, which only means that Waldo Church’s life is in danger. Mr. Steele agrees to meet him at Hotel Saracen in Eagle Rock.

Meanwhile, Laura Holt (Stephanie Zimbalist) arrives at the hotel where her client, Buddy Shapiro is hiding. Unable to get his client’s room number from the concierge, Ms. Holt decides to send flowers to him. She follows the delivery boy to his room. Surprised, Mr. Shapiro is left with no other choice, but to receive the eager private investigator. There she learns that he has decided to leave for Rio de Janeiro with consent from his lawyer. In utter disbelief, Laura Holt tries to put some sense to the man, but fails. Buddy Shapiro having spent eighteen months in jail has no plans in going back to prison. Although he attests his innocence, he believes that having already been convicted of stock manipulation, he is as good as guilty for dealing stolen coins. His only chance of proving his innocence is finding James Rubio, the man who sold the coins to him. It is for that reason that he has hired the Remington Steele detective agency. Unfortunately, after three weeks of working on the case Laura and Murphy still hasn’t found the man. This gives Mr. Shapiro very little hope, which only gives more justification to his plan of leaving the country.

As agreed, Remington Steele goes to meet Waldo Church at the sleazy hotel. He makes his way to the man’s room unaware that James Rubio is right behind him. Waldo Church who saw both men make their way to his room just hides, and watches. Finding that Mr. Church’s room is unlocked, he enters it, and takes a look around. Soon after, with his back turned, a man hits his head with a lamp.

Finally, Murphy Michaels (James Read) returns from San Francisco with news that they were only led on a wild goose chase. Murphy believes that James Rubio was not even there. He did, however, find another clue that might lead them to him – a picture of James Rubio with Buddy Shapiro’s ex-wife. As Laura and Murphy plan their next steps, Remington Steele arrives at the office looking more like a homeless person than his usual dashing appearance. Laura still believes that whoever attacked him is not related to the case. However, Mr. Steele’s story immediately invalidates her theory. With some impatient urging, Laura and Murphy finally divulge to him the details of the case. Their client, Buddy Shapiro was accused of stealing two hundred dollars worth of antique coin collection. One that he claims to have bought from a man named James Rubio, and the sale of which was notarized by Waldo Church. To prove his innocence, Mr. Shapiro hired the Remington Steele detective agency to find Rubio. Having heard the details of their case, Mr. Steele immediately ties it to the classic film D.O.A. where Edmond O’Brian notarized a bill of sale that could prove a man’s innocence, but was later murdered for it. Later, Laura and Murphy learn that the notary Waldo Church had earlier called Mr. Steele to hand over the bill of sale. Murphy makes his way to Hotel Saracen, as Laura forces Mr. Steele to come with her to Mr. Shapiro’s hotel, and tell him exactly what he had told them.

Laura Holt and Remington Steele arrive at Buddy Shapiro’s hotel room to find him getting ready for his escape. Laura tries to dissuade him from skipping town with the new development of Waldo Church’s intention of handing over the bill of sale to Mr. Steele. With Laura’s direction, Remington Steele tries to urge their client not to fly off to Brazil, but for the wrong reasons. Moreover, he inadvertently suggests that he should escape to the Bahamas instead. Laura tries to steer back to the point they intended to make, and that is once he becomes a fugitive, he can never be truly free. Mr. Shapiro becomes unsure of his previous plan, and upon learning that Mr. Steele, despite his polished appearance is truly a man of the street just like him, Buddy Shapiro changes his mind, and temporarily foregoes his plan of flying off to Brazil.

Later, Ms. Holt joins Murphy at the Hotel Saracen in the hopes of finding Waldo Church. However, Laura’s mind is still preoccupied with Mr. Steele’s charming, and impressive persuasion that convinced their client not to skip town. Jealous, Murphy tries to make Laura to stop talking about him, but she seems to have turned a deaf ear on him. However, for a moment it appeared that she did hear him. Laura Holt gives Murphy Michaels a quick kiss, and tells him that whatever he said is absolutely right. Pleased, a smile creeps up his face, but this is soon wiped off when Laura calls Creighton Phillips, their client’s lawyer to accept the dinner date he had proposed earlier that day.

Laura Holt spends her evening with Mr. Phillips at the last place she’d think he would bring her – an amusement park. Despite the unusual venue, Laura seems to be enjoying the evening, and her present company. However, Mr. Phillips could not help, but ask her if there is something going on with her, and Mr. Steele. There is no denying that Laura looks at her boss a certain way, and him the same. In fact, Mr. Phillips noticed that Mr. Steele looks at Laura erotically, and this made her blush. Despite the obvious attraction they seem to share, Laura Holt insists that their relationship is strictly professional. However, Creighton Phillips (Barry Van Dyke) declares his distrust towards her boss. He feels that Remington Steele is not what he appears to be. Knowing this to be true, Laura tries to steer the conversation away from Mr. Steele.

Like Laura, Mr. Steele also spent his evening with a date. Surprisingly, to the same woman he had brought home the night his apartment got ransacked. Mr. Steele and the woman arrive at his apartment, and both are happy to find it the way he had left it. Remington Steele points the more than willing woman to his room, while he builds fire in the fireplace. Not too soon, the woman walks out of his bedroom in shock. Mr. Steele turns the light on in his bedroom only to find the dead body of Waldo Church lying on his bed with a bullet through his chest.

Laura Holt arrives with Creighton Phillips in tow. She wastes no time to confirm that the corpse belongs to Waldo Church. Given their predicament, the two are left with no choice, but to end their dates to work on the case. As soon as their dates leave, Laura wastes no time to make sense of the events, while Mr. Steele voices out his displeasure at learning that she had gone off with Mr. Phillips on a date. Seeing that Mr. Steele is more interested with how she spent her evening than the case, Laura quickly directs them back to the problem at hand, and calls the police.

Early in the morning, Buddy Shapiro’s worst fear comes true. He is sent to jail after the police learned that he was planning on leaving the country. Laura and Mr. Steele arrive at the office, and have a similar conversation as the previous night. He makes it known of his distrust towards Mr. Phillips, and she tells him that he thinks the same way of him. Laura Holt speaks in defense of Creighton Phillips whom she says had turned down a partnership in a law firm to do pro bono work. Annoyed at seeing that Laura had already developed feelings for the man, Mr. Steele inadvertently provokes Ms. Holt into almost admitting that she too has feelings for him, but the woman catches herself mid-sentence. She did, however, make it known that her rule of not mixing business with pleasure is not a hard and fast rule. Their heated conversation is interrupted by a phone call from Creighton Phillips.

Remington Steele arrives at the police station to meet with him, and Buddy Shapiro whom he managed to get released in his custody. Amusingly, their conversation leads to Laura Holt where Mr. Steele warns him of the possible consequences of hurting Laura. With Mr. Shapiro in their custody, Mr. Steele with Laura and Murphy track down Buddy Shapiro’s ex-wife. They find her splurging in Rodeo Drive, but the woman quickly goes in a frantic rage upon meeting Remington Steele. Laura did, however, managed to calm her down enough to learn that her new lover, James Rubio is innocent, and that she believes that her ex-husband only intends to ruin her life. Ms. Holt explains that James Rubio, like her ex-husband, is running away from the police, and that she might be able to help the both of them prove their innocence. Nothing that Laura had said seem to have gotten through the stubborn woman, but it took her no time to lead them to Rubio. The former Mrs. Buddy Shapiro finds her lover James Rubio dead in their flashy car’s trunk. Mr. Steele notices that the man’s hand is clenched in a fist, and believes that the man had probably clutched a piece of evidence identifying his killer before he died. However, he was wrong. The fist turned up empty.

The police arrest Buddy Shapiro after they discover that the gun that killed James Rubio belonged to him. Moreover, the only fingerprints on the gun are his. With him in the slammer for murder, Mr. Shapiro has lost all his trust on the Remington Steele detective agency, but this does not stop them from finishing their job. Having grown fond of Buddy Shapiro, but more so for feeling the need to protect Laura Holt, Mr. Steele enlists the help of an unlikely person – Murphy Michaels. It is obvious that the two do not get along well, but their concern for Laura has brought them together. After doing a background check, Mr. Steele learned that the man she is currently involved with has secrets of his own. Creighton Phillips, and James Rubio were classmates at Harvard until Rubio was expelled for cheating. Moreover, the story of Mr. Phillips turning down a partnership in his law firm is a lie, since the fact is he was passed over. In addition, he had rented a rather luxurious office for a practice he claims to be for the less fortunate. Although all these information barely support Mr. Steele’s hypothesis that Creighton Phillips is responsible for the framing of Buddy Shapiro, and the murders of two people who could prove him to be innocent, the mere thought of Mr. Phillips having relations with Ms. Holt is enough cause for him to further investigate.

Despite not having a motive, witnesses, and hard evidence, somehow Murphy helps Mr. Steele with his plan. Later that night, the two tamper with the telephone lines in Creighton Phillips’ compound. Murphy calls the guard by the gate pretending to be Mr. Phillips announcing the arrival of his guest, Remington Steele. They arrive at the gate, and since they have already been cleared thanks to a personal call from the supposed Creighton Phillips, the two enter the compound without any hassle. Mr. Steele climbs up the balcony of Mr. Phillips’ townhouse, and finds him with Laura Holt reviewing the case. With the two up to their neck with the upcoming trial, Mr. Steele successfully enters the man’s bedroom unnoticed. All is well not until he steps on his cat, and it screeches loud enough to call the attention of the two. Mr. Phillips makes his way up his bedroom to check on his cat, while Laura follows him. Mr. Steele hides under the bed, and comes face-to-face with the angry cat. Creighton tries to look under the bed, but quickly Mr. Steele throws the cat, and it goes running outside the room. With the cat found, Mr. Phillips foregoes searching underneath his bed. Unfortunately, he still has some other ideas up his sleeve. The trouble with the cat seemed to have given him the chance to lure Laura to his bed. Mortified, Mr. Steele could not do anything, but keep quiet and listen to the man as he makes a pass at Laura. Fortunately, strong-willed Ms. Holt breaks free, and successfully convinces the man to get back to business. With them out of sight, Mr. Steele resumes to the job he snuck in there for. That is, take a sample of Creighton Phillips hair from his brush.

The following day, all except Mr. Steele are in his office discussing the strategy for the preliminary hearing. He interrupts the meeting to insist that what they should be doing is to find the person responsible for all the crime Buddy Shapiro is accused of. He explains that the guilty party must be someone who has a relationship with James Rubio at which point Creighton Phillips puts Ivy Shapiro, Buddy’s ex-wife as the only person to fit that angle. Ms. Holt argues that Ivy has no reason to commit the murder, but Mr. Phillips disputes that the two might have had a falling out. Mr. Steele agrees with Ms. Holt, and further explains that the person must have known Rubio a long time ago such that their connection could hardly be tracked. He makes a case that the killer might be an old college classmate of Rubio, and also a person whom Buddy Shapiro trusts, and has access to his house. Feeling that Mr. Steele is painting an arrow that point to him, Mr. Phillips continues to argue that Ivy Shapiro could be their prime suspect. Buddy has had enough of his lawyer’s argument, and comes to the defense of his ex-wife. Having struck out Ivy as their suspect, Mr. Steele lays out the true murderer’s motive. According to him, the killer is someone who is so desperate, and disappointed after being passed over for a partnership at his law firm that he decides to start his own practice. The only problem is he has no money to use as capital. Buddy Shapiro puts two and two together especially after remembering that he had given Creighton Phillips power of attorney before he was imprisoned. Laura Holt is filled with incredulity at the unmasking of the real murderer. In spite of the detailed explanation that reveals him as the murderer, Mr. Phillips is not moved, since Mr. Steele has not presented a single evidence to tie him to the murders. His smug grin is washed off when Mr. Steele produces a small plastic bag filled with strands of his hair he claims to have gotten from the clenched fist of James Rubio’s corpse. Guilty, and pinned to the wall, the only thing Mr. Phillips could do is strike a punch at the man who has uncovered his crimes – Remington Steele. Mr. Steele manages to dodge the punch, and lays one on Creighton Phillips angry face, but not without breaking his hand.

While Laura Holt and Remington Steele wait outside the courthouse for Buddy Shapiro, he tells her how he has found new zeal for her profession. Him almost single-handedly solving the case that apprehended the guilty made it an exhilarating experience. Laura, however, warns him that his methods are troublesome especially when he introduced a false piece of evidence. Having been with him when they unclenched the dead man’s fist, she is sure of the fact that the proof he presented that sent Creighton Phillips to act as the guilty party is fabricated. It, nevertheless, did its job. However, Laura wonders whether Mr. Steele would have pursued the case if she had not been involved with his prime suspect. Mr. Steele does not admit the obvious, but he does make it known that he knows that she had been fooling around with him on his bed. Buddy Shapiro arrives before Laura Holt even learns how Mr. Steele knew of that embarrassing detail. With the real killer caught, Buddy Shapiro is cleared of all the crimes he was accused of, and his parole has been reinstated, but more importantly he and his ex-wife Ivy Shapiro are back together.

Thou Shall Not Steele – Remington Steele Episode Summary 1.5

Laura Holt and Mr. Steele steal from a museumSynopsis: The Remington Steele detective agency was hired to protect an accursed painting – The Five Nudes of Cairo. Having once stolen the painting, Mr. Steele argues on not taking the case, but Laura Holt’s wishes prevail. Things become complicated when Felicia, Mr. Steele's old flame, re-enters his life, but only to have him steal the painting for her.

Episode Summary: It is night and the museum is silent and empty when a thief swings from a rope and disarms the floor alarm. The burglar with the help of a remote controlled toy car manages to deactivate the laser beams and quickly makes her way, unnoticed by the guard, to the room where a priceless painting sits. However, only a few feet away from the painting the alarm bell rings, and guards pour in to check on the painting that is left untouched though the culprit who attempted to steal it is no longer in sight.  Continue reading...

The painting is the famous The Five Nudes of Cairo. Given last night’s events, both the head of the museum Edward Coxworth and the curator Achmed Kalil have come to seek the help of the Remington Steele detective agency to protect the painting from the thief. However, Mr. Steele (Pierce Brosnan) who knows the painting very well decides to turn down the case. A thief himself, he is very familiar with the history of The Five Nudes of Cairo including the curse it carries.

Though the agency has yet to accept the case, it seems that the curse had already began its wrath and Laura Holt (Stephanie Zimbalist) is its first victim. On her way to work, Laura met a minor car accident that made her very late for the meeting. Already having an unpleasant morning, learning that Mr. Steele had refused to accept the case is no help at all.

Seeing that Mr. Steele has yet again forgotten his place in the agency, and had deliberately stepped on her toes, Laura could not help but be upset with the figurehead. Mr. Steele tries his best to explain and convince Laura not to take the case given the painting’s history, but fails. He erred when he asked Laura to put her trust on him. And so with a handshake the matter is settled, Remington Steele Investigations accepts the task of protecting The Five Nudes of Cairo.

Despite the good news, Laura still seems edgier than usual, which baffles both Bernice Wolfe (Janet Demay) and Mr. Steele. Before anyone of them could ask, the answer to their question soon arrives – Abigail Holt (Beverly Garland). Laura’s mother is in town for a visit, which explains why Laura had ordered Ms. Wolfe to keep her schedule full for the whole week. It is no secret that Laura’s relationship with her mother is not what you would call dear. In fact, she had not spent any time with her in nearly three years.

So it seems that Laura is not planning on spending much of her time with her mother while she is in town. She leaves her with Ms. Wolfe at the office as she and Mr. Steele retrace the burglar’s footsteps. However, Mr. Steele is more interested in finding out more about Laura’s relationship with her mother than the case, but this all changes when Mr. Kalil introduces them to his assistant Katherine Simone (Cassandra Harris). According to Mr. Kalil, it was she who referred them to the Remington Steele detective agency unaware that she and Mr. Steele had a past together, and that both are thieves. Katherine who really is Felicia, Mr. Steele’s old flame, seduces him and asks him to steal The Five Nudes of Cairo.

Later that night, Murphy Michaels (James Read) briefs Laura on his research where he learned that a woman and a man calling himself Michael O’Leary had once stolen the painting. Michael O’Leary was one of Mr. Steele’s identities in his previous shady life. Murphy who from the onset distrusts the mysterious man suspects that he had all along been using the detective agency to get his hands on a prize such as The Five Nudes of Cairo. Laura refuses to believe this, and urges Murphy to keep an open-mind regarding Mr. Steele’s intention, but the news nonetheless gave her a feeling of uncertainty.

If there is one word to describe Abigail Holt it is interfering, and her interest lies mostly on her daughter’s love life. It appears that Mrs. Holt is disappointed at the path that Laura took, and would always make it a point to compare her with her happily married older sister Frances. Unlucky for Laura, her mother already has Mr. Steele as a candidate for her thanks to his zeal to take the two women out to dinner. Although, it is against Laura’s better judgment to spend an evening with her mother and Mr. Steele, she was left with no other choice given that her mother had already accepted the offer. She drops by at Mr. Steele’s apartment while her mother stays in the car.

Laura takes the opportunity to confront Mr. Steele about his decision on refusing to take the case. He again uses the curse as his reason. According to history, the reigning pasha at the time the picture was made wanted to destroy the painting given that it is against their religion for a woman to appear nude in front of any man other than their husband. However, before he could destroy it, The Five Nudes of Cairo had been smuggled out of the country. As a result, he placed a curse on anyone who dared to possess the painting. Mr. Steele remains adamant that this is the reason why he did not want to take the case. Before Laura could get to ask him about the transgressions of one of his former identities, Felicia donning one of Mr. Steele’s bathrobes comes out of his bedroom. The woman had sneaked into his bedroom around the same time Laura arrived, which surprised both Laura and Mr. Steele. Mr. Steele desperately tries to convince her that he did not know how the woman got into his bedroom, but Laura is already too embarrassed and offended to listen to him that she just leaves.

It seems that Laura’s luck had run out, since one of the men who are out to get Felicia mistook her for Mr. Steele’s old lover. As it turns out, Felicia owes Gutman, a shady character some money, and had promised the man The Five Nudes of Cairo. Seeing the photograph of Mr. Steele reminded her of their last job together despite the disagreeable result. Learning that the painting is in the same city where the great Remington Steele is Felicia knew it to be fate. However, the man she is facing now is no longer the same man she used to know. Felicia senses that something has changed the Michael O’Leary she once knew, and suspects that someone had stolen his heart. Though one would not catch Mr. Steele admit it, but it is Laura who had somehow changed him.

Her captors trap poor, drugged Laura inside a drum. Ironically, her mother unaware of her daughter’s unfortunate predicament ends up helping her kidnappers get away. It was not until the furious Mrs. Holt arrives at Mr. Steele’s apartment did they learn that Laura had gone missing. Laura comes to consciousness only to find that she is a victim of a mistaken identity. She fakes an asthma attack and manages to escape. It was a feat that she herself could not believe, and she arrives home only to find her mother and Mr. Steele waiting for her. Apparently, the two thought that she had deliberately run away as a result of their disagreements. Laura tries to tell her mother about her kidnapping and her brilliant escape, but she would not listen. Truth is, Mrs. Holt does not approve of her career as a private investigator. Narrow-minded and uninterested, Laura’s mother leaves her and Mr. Steele alone giving the two a chance to argue some more.

Mr. Steele reminds her of how much he insisted not to take the case, while Laura wants to know what he knows about her kidnapping. Mr. Kalil dying at Laura’s front door ends their heated argument. Laura tries her best to keep her mother from seeing the corpse, but fails miserably. Good thing Mr. Steele was already way ahead of her. He had sat the lifeless body of Mr. Kalil on one of Laura’s chair and even put a cigarette between his fingers to make it look like the two are merely discussing the case.

The following day, Laura arrives at the office with unpleasant news from her staff. Apparently, Mr. Steele had ordered them to buy or rent some rather questionable items and equipment. Laura in the hope of getting the truth from Mr. Steele ends up helping him steal The Five Nudes of Cairo from the museum that hired them to protect it. Somehow, Mr. Steele has convinced her that stealing the painting would force the thief to come after them after they themselves have stolen it. Much to Murphy’s chagrin, she deliberately overlooks the idea that Mr. Steele might be the thief.

The two sets off to steal the painting using the service entrance key they got from Mr. Kalil to enter the museum. With the help of a spear gun, they manage to swing across the room bypassing the floor alarms. To get through the laser beams, Mr. Steele had wound several crawling toys enough to cause the foolish security guard to turn off the laser beams in his attempt to see where they are coming from. He leaves to get the other guards to search for the intruder forgetting to turn on the laser beams. This allowed the two to pass through without any problems. They sit and wait until one of the guards calls his colleagues to discuss about the appearance of the crawling toys. Foolish as he is, he calls all guards including the one stationed at the room where the painting lies. As soon as the guard left his post, Mr. Steele enters the room without Laura. Apparently, a heat-sensitive device was installed to protect the painting. He argues that the two of them in the room would only trigger the alarm. Also, Laura would need to create a diversion when by some unfortunate chance Mr. Steele sets off the alarm.

Mr. Steele easily enters the room, and with a help of a canister of cold air he manages to steal the painting without tripping the heat-sensitive alarm. All is well not until Laura comes out of her hiding place and trips on the laser beams that had just been restarted. The guards catch her. Truth is, Mr. Steele too would have been caught only he has a backup plan. He had prepared a perfect disguise – a security guard uniform.

Laura ends up spending a night in jail, and to add to her regrettable ordeal her mother had to post bail for her. In addition, Murphy arrives with news that Mr. Steele had gone missing. Moreover, their client Mr. Coxworth confronts her with harsh words. Mrs. Holt may be disappointed with her daughter, but she sure stands by her at her time of need that she wastes no time to reprimand the angry client. It seems that Laura has inherited her mother’s trusting nature as she too stands behind Mr. Steele despite his questionable disappearance.

It seems that it is only Laura who believes that Mr. Steele had not truly abandoned them, and she is right to stand by the man. She learns from Felicia the truth, which he so tried to tell her, but could not accept as true. Felicia confesses to blackmailing Mr. Steele into stealing The Five Nudes of Cairo, which she was going to use to repay Gutman. Mr. Steele believing that Felicia would expose that he is nothing but a fraud agreed to her request. Eager to learn the mysterious stranger’s identity, Laura asks Mr. Steele’s old lover who he really is, but she comes out empty handed. Not even Felicia knows his real identity, and it seems that Laura has a better chance of finding out. The affection that once existed between Mr. Steele and Felicia appears to have waned. This his old flame supposes after Mr. Steele chose to steal the painting with Laura rather than with her.

Truth is, the absentee Mr. Steele has made it his mission to get to the bottom of things. Through an anonymous phone call to the police, he leads them to the real culprit, Gutman, where he plans on planting incriminating evidence on the murder of Achmed Kalil. Unfortunately, Gutman is already one step ahead of him. Hung upside down by his captors, Mr. Steele calls Laura at the office. Unfortunately, Mrs. Holt who has relieved Ms. Wolfe as the receptionist was unable to get the whole message much more deduce that Mr. Steele is actually in trouble. Laura with Felicia arrives at the warehouse where Mr. Steele is held hostage. Missing the important part of the message, the two did not bring with them the coveted painting such that Mrs. Holt ends up delivering it at the warehouse consequently becoming one of Gutman’s captives. Learning that the painting that was delivered is nothing but a roll of canvas, Gutman threatens to kill one of the captives. Finally realizing the gravity of the situation they are in, Mrs. Holt gets an asthma attack from sheer fright. Laura having used the trick to fool the two once before, Gutman and his goon mistake the attack as purely acting. To save her mother from dying from asthma, Laura risks her life to save her, which also gave them the chance to turn the tables. Not only did they escape mortal danger, Mrs. Holt gains better understanding of her daughter’s work.

With Gutman out in the open, the only thing left to settle is the Remington Steele detective agency’s reputation. Mr. Steele returns the painting, which actually never left the museum since he hid it in one of the huge vases on display. He explains that although immediately divulging the hiding place would have cleared their name in an instant, the real thief would not have been caught. Somehow Laura feels that the man had somehow changed, since he could have easily kept the painting and disappeared. Hoping to pry what really is in the mysterious man’s mind, she is left hanging when Mr. Steele still insists that the curse was the only reason that stopped him from reverting to his old criminal ways.

Murphy Michaels (James Read) tries for the last time to convince her to come away with him to Palm Springs for the weekend, but she politely turns him down. Murphy could be very much inclined to think that his friend might just be making excuses to avoid spending time with him, but having known her for quite some time now, her working late on a Friday or even over the weekend is a legitimate excuse.  Continue reading...

It would seem that only a workaholic such as Laura would not have any plans for the night. Well, Mr. Steele (Pierce Brosnan) had plans, but his date had canceled on him. He looks not far to get a replacement – Laura. Desperate, Mr. Steele boldly and callously asks her for a date. It would have worked if only it was not so last minute. Not easily fooled, Laura knew exactly that she was only a second choice, a mere replacement for a planned night on the town that was meant for another woman. Insulted with seeing her as only a stand-in, much more for assuming that she does not have any plans for the night, Laura pretends to have something planned and she leaves the office leaving Mr. Steele and her paperwork behind.

When everyone but Mr. Steele had left, a bloodstained man enters the Remington Steele detective agency surprising Mr. Steele who is on the phone desperately looking for a date for the evening. Not knowing what to do with the man, he brings him to Laura. Imagine her surprise when he turns up at her doorstep, while she is at home on her couch dateless, and waiting for her pizza delivery. To continue her little pretense, Laura scurries to make it look like that she is merely getting ready for a night out on the town unaware that Mr. Steele truly has a client with him, and was not just checking up on her.

Mr. Steele brings in Sheldon Quarry, a man on the run from the CIA. Sheldon worked for the CIA’s Information Retrieval department where he was known as the Answer Man. Ask him any question, and he will give you the answer. All was well until Wednesday. Sheldon was on his way to his wedding rehearsal when one of his friends, Lenny Palmieri, hitches a ride with him only he gets blown up. Lenny who beat him to his car had inadvertently saved his life. Unaware that Sheldon’s car was rigged with a bomb, Lenny triggers the device at the moment he opened the driver’s door. Since then Sheldon had been on the run afraid for his life.

Earlier in an attempt to confuse his predators, he had turned his motel room upside down smearing it and himself with red hair-dye to make it look like that he already had been slaughtered. Unfortunately, the only one he managed to surprise is the cleaning lady. With his cover blown, he escapes, but roadwork had made him an easy target as a seductive woman starts shooting at him. Luckily, he gets away. With nowhere else to turn to, he decides to hire the services of the great detective Remington Steele whom he learned to be an ex-CIA agent unaware that all was a lie. Not finding any record of Remington Steele’s existence, a main characteristic of a CIA agent, Sheldon Quarry had made himself believe that the great detective truly was an operative.

Laura pities the man who was supposed to be married the following day. She and Mr. Steele take him in as a client. She makes it her first task to inform the bride that Sheldon is alive and well. The bride-to-be is Lucille Seward, the only daughter of a successful publisher. Not having heard from his soon-to-be son-in-law for four days, John Seward is furious and anxious to know where the groom had gone. Although Laura could not tell them where he is, she assures them that she will try her very best to have Sheldon ready for the wedding.

On her way home, Laura finds her car being followed. She finds refuge at the supermarket where she hitches a ride home. She returns only to be confronted by a rather jealous Mr. Steele who seems to be upset upon learning that Laura had once lived with a man. This he learned after finding men’s clothing in her closet not to mention men’s bikini underwear, and a t-shirt that says “Bankers do it with interest”. Mr. Steele learning that she had lived with a man is the least of Laura’s worries. Her ordeal had made her believe that Sheldon’s predator is already on to them, and that there is no other choice, but for them to go on the run.

Morning came and Mr. Steele seems to find it very appealing to wake up with Laura sleeping beside him. Though this was not how he had imagined it to be, since they only literally slept together; Sheldon who is at the backseat of the rented car asleep would attest that nothing happened; it was an idea that brought a smile to Mr. Steele even if only to make Murphy jealous. Laura tells him that Murphy only worries that she would fall so deeply in love with Mr. Steele only to later find him gone. Later, Laura regrets having let it slip that she thinks the same way as Murphy. Mr. Steele’s insensitive reaction to her revelation was the reason for her regret.

Tired of running around in circles to only elude their predators, Mr. Steele decides to get to the bottom of things. His idea – confront the Central Intelligence Agency. They meet with Eugene Price, the Operations Director. Much to their surprise, the man receives them very well. In fact, he acts as though Mr. Steele and he had been pals for a very long time. Although, the mention of Sheldon Quarry seemed to have unnerved the man causing him to abruptly end their meeting. It was a rather awkward meeting that only confused them more. They return to Sheldon without any answers, and later find one of Sheldon’s colleagues, Charlie Webb working on their car’s engine. He warns them not to step any closer, and they watch as Charlie gets sprung from the ground caused by the force made by the car’s explosion.

Upset at the threat to their lives, Mr. Steele accosts Eugene Price only to learn that they are in fact protecting Sheldon Quarry. Apparently, the CIA had been on Sheldon’s tail after the first car explosion that took the life of fellow CIA employee, Larry Palmieri. Unaware of what covert operation Sheldon is up to, Eugene found it best to have him followed. However, the only thing they learned is that a blonde, woman assassin had been chasing him. Seeing the photograph of the assassin, Laura identifies her as Lucille Seward’s nurse. Just when things seem to be falling into place, they learn that Sheldon had run away. Laura knows that there is only one place to find him – at his wedding.

Mr. Steele disguises as his best man, Simon Courtney to keep Sheldon from emerging into the open until Laura and Eugene find the assassin. However, too much time had passed, and Mr. Steele could no longer stall the anxious bride, father-in-law, and guests. Left with no other choice, they emerge from behind the trellis and into the open. Luckily, Laura finds the assassin just in time, but too late for Eugene whom she already killed.

Laura struggles with the woman, and alerts the crowd of the assassin as she flees. Soon they learn that Mr. Seward is actually the mastermind to Sheldon Quarry’s eradication. With a gun in hand, Mr. Seward and the assassin attempt to escape, but Mr. Steele, Sheldon and Laura put a stop to it. Apparently, Mr. Seward is smuggling American computer technological secrets abroad through his foreign edition classic books. He believed in equality equals security, that no country should know more than any other. Learning that his daughter is going to marry a man working for the CIA, he panicked thinking that the agency had learned about his smuggling. Unaware that Sheldon or anyone at the CIA knew about his illegal activities.

Alas! Monday came, and Murphy returns to the office to find Laura still buried with paperwork. Before Laura could tell him the surprisingly exciting weekend she had, Murphy had started his lecture about her working too hard, and spending so much time behind a desk. After hearing Murphy’s lecture, and seeing his real concern for her, somehow Laura could no longer bring herself to tell her friend of the adventurous weekend she spent with Mr. Steele.

Mr. Fervitz is a computer genius who unexpectedly found success in the videogames industry. He along with his friends from grad school formed the successful videogame company Ratooi Games International where he is the president. Ratooi Games International is set to merge with Gruff and Reston Industries, the corporation that has been slowly taking over their company as soon as Ratooi became public. The merger was their answer to keep the corporation from fully taking over their company. The trouble that Mr. Fervitz now faces is that George Kaplan, his vice-president, has suddenly disappeared. Afraid that his disappearance would cost them the merger, he decided to hire the Remington Steele detective agency to quietly find the missing vice-president.

Mr. Steele finally arrives at the office, and both Laura and Mr. Arnok are not pleased. He continues to irate them when he again puts aside their client to discuss with Laura the case he took on himself despite their agreed arrangement where he only functions as a figurehead. So far, Mr. Steele has not kept his side of the bargain as he persists on involving himself on their cases, and continues to fail to put on an appearance when needed. This time he might have cost them a very important client, Mr. Arnok who after waiting for two hours for the tardy head of the agency decided to leave.

As a compromise, Laura Holt agrees to check out the case that Mr. Steele took on, expecting that in return, he would try his very best to get Mr. Arnok to sign the deal. They arrive at the Ratooi office to meet their clients, Albee Fervitz, his wife Sheila who happens to be their Chief Financial Officer, and Izzy Webster the V.P. of Development. Unlike Albee, Sheila seems to think that the missing George Kaplan has run away taking with him $5 million dollars of their company’s liquid assets. Moreover, she opposes with the merger that her husband has agreed to undertake. As it turns out, their visit was not fruitless, not only did they discover a clue, Laura also found a note that was inconspicuously dropped in her purse.

Their meeting has proven that Mr. Steele had truly landed the agency a legitimate case. Seeing that the figurehead has stumbled upon a real case, Laura decides to look more into it without letting Mr. Steele know of her sudden interest on the assignment. It was a little white lie made only to keep him from completely foregoing the Arnok project. However, with or without the knowledge of Laura’s change of heart, Mr. Steele could not help but pursue the more interesting case of finding the missing George Kaplan. Defying once again her instructions, he makes his way to George’s condominium only to meet George’s ex-girlfriend whom he conveniently broke-up with right before he disappeared.

While Mr. Steele finally meets Mr. Arnok who is already on his way to the airport, Laura returns to the Ratooi office to meet with the person who slipped the note in her purse. She finds herself trapped in a maze of noisy videogame machine feeling slightly unnerved with the secret meeting. Fortunately, the seemingly dangerous atmosphere caused by the endless beeping of the videogames is merely a security system that Izzy Webster had installed. Izzy’s blindness did not hinder him from having a successful career. As a matter of fact, it might even have helped him, since the main part of his job is to incorporate sound into the videogames they create. It was him who arranged for the secret meeting to tell Mr. Steele that their newest video game Deep Water believed to be worth $50 million had gone missing. He believes that the missing $5 million that George Kaplan allegedly took is only a cover, and that the real target is the multi-million dollar videogame.

Mr. Arnok unwittingly gets entangled with the Remington Steele Investigations’ other case when he accepts Mr. Steele’s offer to drive him to the airport. Mr. Steele whose mind is still wrapped around the Kaplan case has decided to get more information about George through his ex-girlfriend. However, before he gets anything out of her she gets shot in front of him and Mr. Arnok. Luckily, she manages to identify her killer just before taking her last breath. Mr. Steele runs after the shooter while Mr. Arnok gets stuck with the dead woman. Unfortunately, the culprit manages to get away, and though his identity was revealed Mr. Steele still does not know what he looks like.

Mr. Steele and Laura inform their clients of the recent events. Albee despite evidence pointing to George remains unconvinced that his good friend is a thief much more a murderer. The new developments on the case create more questions than answers. Murphy whom Laura sent to Las Vegas to track the elusive George Kaplan is convinced that the man is there, but his ex-girlfriend identifying him as her shooter disproves this. To add to their confusion, they receive a phone call from a man claiming to have George hostage. He instructs Albee to meet him at the Bali Way marina. With more than enough time left before the imposed meeting, Laura suggests the she and Mr. Steele position themselves in the marina before Albee arrives to meet with the kidnapper. However, with Mr. Arnok stuck with them the two are left with no other choice, but to bring him along.

While Laura and Mr. Steele stroll along the marina posing as lovers, Mr. Arnok receives a phone call for Mr. Steele from a desperate sounding man. Mr. Arnok arrives, and interrupts the two who happen to be kissing. Laura though obviously rapt with the brief display of intimacy quickly explains to the equally embarrassed Mr. Arnok that it was merely part of their cover. Right after Mr. Arnok informs Mr. Steele of the phone call the three find themselves being shot at. Surviving the attack, the three return to the Remington Steele Investigations office where Mr. Steele receives yet another phone call from the man who called earlier - Izzy Webster. Izzy has decided to inform Mr. Steele the truth about George Kaplan, and urges him to meet him at his office. Unfortunately, the killer got to him first, but he did manage to give them a clue right before he died.

Seeing that any person who knew George gets killed, Laura conceives of a plan to talk to a person who only knows him peripherally. Mr. Steele immediately thinks of Manuel, one of the janitors who kidnapped him. Laura spends the whole night looking for Manuel only to find him in Mr. Steele’s apartment. Despite learning that Manuel had never met George Kaplan, Laura seems very pleased. This is because she has finally made some sense on the case. With the help of Mr. Arnok’s knowledge about corporate takeovers her suspicion is confirmed, George Kaplan’s disappearance including the theft of millions of dollars of the company’s assets and the plans for their next big project is only a ploy to stop the merger from happening. No corporation would invest on a troubled small company, and that is why Gruff and Reston Industries would surely pull out of the deal.

Given the trouble that the case he accepted brought to the detective agency, Mr. Steele without arguments agrees to let Laura finalize the case, and to bring Mr. Arnok straight to the airport. However, as luck would have it they discover that Izzy’s dying words were actually a clue. This time, it is Mr. Arnok who foregoes his flight to follow their new lead. Having been entangled in the messy case for far too long, Mr. Arnok could not pass up the chance that might finally close the case.

While Laura and Murphy visit George Kaplan’s house, Mr. Steele and Mr. Arnok head to the marina to check out Toodle-Loo – George’s boat. Having found a marked navigation chart, Mr. Arnok and Mr. Steele make their way to the marked spot. Meanwhile, Murphy and Laura are convinced that George Kaplan does not exist. The only hiccup to this highly plausible supposition is that he had a girlfriend. With only a couple of minutes left before the merger, Laura anxiously awaits for Mr. Steele. He and Mr. Arnok arrive in the nick of time claiming to have George Kaplan with him.

Believing that the corpse of George Kaplan is inside the trunk he found at the bottom of the sea, Mr. Steele’s reveal was unsuccessful when he opens the trunk only to find the $5 million in assets and the new Deep Water game. Luckily, Laura was there to pick up the pieces. She brings in George Kaplan’s condominium manager who identifies Albee Ferbitz as the elusive George. Apparently, George Kaplan was only the figment of the imaginations of Albee, Sheila, and Izzy. Learning of Gruff and Reston Industries’ takeover plans, the three created George to become the fourth executive. Knowing that the takeover could not be stopped, their plan was to take the money, and pass all the blame on the fictitious executive. Also part of their plan is to hire the Remington Steele detective agency to search for him, but only to confirm that the man had vanished. It was a foolproof scheme if not for Albee’s extramarital affair. Taking advantage of the entity they invented, Albee assumed George Kaplan’s identity such that he could continue his affair with his lover without being caught. Little did he know that his folly would be the cause of their downfall. Because Mr. Steele happened to meet this ex-girlfriend of his, Mr. Ferbitz was left with no other choice but to kill the woman that would expose their scheme. Learning of the murder, Izzy wanted to disengage from the whole mess by confessing his involvement, but this only led to his unfortunate death. With all that has happened, Mr. Arnok could not help but become engrossed with detective work, and has decided to sell his multi-million dollar business to become a private investigator. That is, until his wife brings him back to his senses.

Now that the charlatan has officially assumed the Remington Steele identity, he seems to relish his new role. Unfortunately for Laura Holt (Stephanie Zimbalist) the man is enjoying far too much the case she had assigned to him. She had tasked him to keep a seductive woman, Nadine, out of the way until she finishes the case that concerns her. It was a task he excellently accomplished. The only thing is the case had already been closed for a couple of days, but Mr. Steele (Pierce Brosnan) continues his supposed job not to mention his excessive use of the company credit card. Tired of the new figurehead flushing the detective agency’s money down the drain, Laura has just figured out a plan to get his attention. She had sent orders to close Remington Steele’s checking account and credit cards. It was a surefire trick only it bounced right back on her.  Continue reading...

Furious with the embarrassing evening of having Nadine pay for the extravagant dinner, Mr. Steele returns to the office in search for Laura – the mastermind of his financial ruin. Learning from Bernice her whereabouts, he storms at the motel room where Laura has the unpleasant task of seducing their suspect. Pretending to be a secretary, her plan is to get the man to ask her to steal the information from her client’s company. Just when they are close to catching him red-handed, Mr. Steele barges inside the motel room. With his reputation, it did not take the man too long to recognize him as the great detective Remington Steele. Learning of the trap, the man flees leaving Laura in deep trouble with their displeased client, Rodger Dillon.

Jim Meecham is the owner of Meecham Exploration and Development and a new investor on Dillon Electronics. Learning of the theft of certain company research, and the recent motel fiasco, Mr. Meecham has taken upon himself to get Mr. Steele directly involved on the case. Bringing with him twenty-five thousand dollars seemed to have done the trick. Mr. Steele could not pass up this opportunity given that he already is in serious trouble after doing business with shady personas known to settle debts with brutality.

Unaware of the recent development, Laura returns to the office only to learn that Mr. Steele had personally accepted a job, and even convinced their client of a new plan to handle the case. His plan is to install a complete security system. The chauvinist Mr. Meecham is determined to have Remington Steele directly involved on the case, such that Laura could do nothing, but to go along with the new scheme. Furious at losing control of her own detective agency, the two engage in a heated argument that somehow ends in a conversation of them converting their passions into something more fulfilling. Although Laura admits to desiring hopping in the sack with Mr. Steele, she has not completely lost her head, and she regains her composure to make it clear to him of her intention of keeping their relationship businesslike.

Mr. Steele sets out to fulfill the assignment he took on, and enlists the help of an old friend, Wallace. Wallace is a reformed thief who has the knowledge and experience of evading security systems enough to have the skill of installing one. Part of his rehabilitation is becoming a motivational speaker to alcoholics, and down on luck bums like him.

Given their previous conversation, Laura could not help but become mesmerized with the gorgeous Mr. Steele. Bernice sees right through her boss, and urges her to put aside her reservations. However, Laura remains hesitant, and seems to take pride at being the only woman who managed not to sleep with the dashing and mysterious stranger. Moreover, she has made herself believe that her playing hard-to-get might be one of the few reasons why the man has decided to stick around.

The messy task of installing the security system ensues. However, Laura seems to be preoccupied in learning who the stranger really is. Her questioning leads her nowhere, and the fifty thousand dollar security system seems to be a failure as well despite the impressive display of it being foolproof. Not only is the Remington Steele Investigations reputation at stake it now faces a lawsuit where their client swears to run them dry. Given the manner of the robbery, they could only assume that it is an inside job where Mr. Steele’s friend is the prime suspect.

Despite all the trouble the miscreant Mr. Steele had caused, Laura could not help but be drawn to the man. She accepts his dinner invitation hoping against hope that Mr. Steele truly has startling news about the Dillon case. However, he fails her again, but not without making her feel good about herself. The charming Mr. Steele seems to always know the right words to say, and it probably works like a charm with all the women he goes out with. However, as the maitre d' who is familiar with his many trysts would attest this particular woman is a class of her own. Mr. Steele recognizes this, which leads him to suppose that she might be the one to tame his wandering eye. Their evening had just started to blossom when devastating news came their way. Wallace was found dead.

Laura sees a different side to Mr. Steele when a pathologist so callously dismisses the deceased as a deadbeat addict. In view of the fact that it was him who brought poor Wallace into this whole mess, Mr. Steele could not help but blame himself for the death of his good friend who appears to have been framed then murdered. Determined to find Wallace’s killer, Mr. Steele with the help of Laura immediately work to get to the bottom of things. They begin their search for answers at Wallace’s neighborhood where Laura almost shares the same fate as Wallace. Luckily, Mr. Steele comes to her rescue.

Seeing Laura’s attacker drive off in a Porsche, they immediately suspect Mr. Meecham. Laura meets him just so Mr. Steele could go through his hotel room where he finds plans that implies his intention to bankrupt Dillon Electronics. This and having discovered that Wallace died by means of a lethal dose of horse muscle relaxant; he is convinced that Mr. Meecham is the culprit. However, both Laura and Murphy have different suspects. Laura suspects Mr. Dillon whose incompetence, and lavishness caused the downfall of his family’s company. On the other hand, Murphy’s guess is Mrs. Meecham who was the one who insisted to move the valuable research to their house where it was stolen despite the hi-tech security system they just installed.

Anxious to catch the murderer, Mr. Steele following Laura’s advice to retrieve evidence to support their suspicion wastes no time to get it. To provide them good reason to be at the Dillon’s property, Mr. Steele had joined the surprisingly expensive polo match. Apparently, he had bet twenty-five thousand dollars against Rodger Dillon and Jim Meecham. While everybody’s attention is on the polo match, Laura takes the opportunity to sneak in the stables to retrieve evidence that would help them determine the murderous thief. In her search, she finds the horse muscle relaxant, a syringe and tea leaves. Moreover, she sees her attacker’s Porsche, and two suspicious looking men who according to his mother, Mrs. Dillon, are Rodger’s partners on his new venture. Although the evidence seems to point to Rodger Dillon, Jim Meecham’s behavior is enough to arise suspicion. During the polo match, he had attempted a couple of times to cause harm on Mr. Steele. Unlucky for him, none were successful. In fact, his last effort backfired.

With still no clue as to who truly is the murderer, Mr. Steele has managed to talk Laura into one of his unconventional plans. His plan is to do what William Powell did in the movie, The Thin Man, and that is, gather all the suspects at a dinner party, reconstruct the crime to ultimately expose the murderer. After Murphy arrives with the autopsy report, Laura’s demeanor changes as she suddenly becomes game with the whole arrangement. Glad with Laura’s change of heart, Mr. Steele proceeds with his plan only he continually provides details that are inconsistent with the autopsy report. Good thing, Laura is right beside him to steer him in the right direction. While Mr. Steele persists that Mr. Meecham is the culprit, Laura and Murphy had already planned to trap the real murderer. Murphy serves Mrs. Dillon a cup of tea -- her own recipe. Having read from the autopsy report that Wallace had drank tea right before his death plus her discovery of the woman’s tea leaves in the stable, Laura is utterly convinced that Mrs. Dillon is the murderer. She accuses the old woman, but Mr. Steele is too busy arguing with his suspect, Mr. Meecham. Cornered, Mrs. Dillon pulls out a gun from her purse, and almost hits Mr. Meecham. Thanks to Mr. Steele who happened to punch him on the face at the exact time the shot was fired, Mr. Meecham dodges the bullet.

Apparently, Rodger Dillon is the one who is stealing company research. Having run Dillon Electronics to the ground, he engaged in a new venture -- selling his company’s own research to the highest bidder. Mrs. Dillon learns of his son’s new endeavor, and decided to take it upon herself to save the company that her husband built. Unfortunately, Wallace saw her stealing the research they were guarding unaware that she was in fact protecting it from her son. As expected, Mr. Steele gets all the credit despite not knowing how the case was solved though much of the recognition is brought about by Jim Meecham’s fortuitous rescue. However, all the attention has convinced Mr. Steele that he is indeed good.
