Happy Valley Recap of Episode 5 Season 1: The police and ambulance arrive to find Sergeant Catherine Cawood lying on the street unconscious, and Ann Gallagher inside her police car who informs them of having been abducted and assaulted for the last four days.  Ann informs them the assailant is still in the cellar for Sgt. Cawood managed to gas him causing Inspector Mike Taylor to instruct police officers to surround the house, check the cellar, and calls on various crime agencies to report the attempted murder of a police officer.  However, Tommy Lee Royce managed to escape the cellar before the police arrived allowing him to call on Ashley Cowgill for help, but Ashley forsakes him and destroys the SIM card that could lead the pursued criminal back to him.  Tommy then calls Lewis Whippey for help offering money in return.

News of Ann’s escape has yet to reach Nevison Gallagher who follows Detective Phil Crabtree’s instructions of concealing their suspicion of Kevin Weatherill’s possible involvement with the kidnapping when they speak to him.  Detective Crabtree begins asking Kevin for details about the ransom drop-off, and the nervous accountant has difficulty describing the places where he left the ransom.  A call bearing news that the police have Ann Gallagher in their care interrupts the interrogation forcing Detective Crabtree to leave Kevin to inform Nevison of the good news, which Nevison mistakes as information extracted from Kevin which the detective was quick to correct.  Nevison calls Helen to inform her that Ann has been found and is safe in a local hospital for a routine checkup before rushing out to be with his family.  Soon after, Detective Crabtree arrests Kevin for suspicion of abduction and demanding money with menaces after learning Kevin’s car was not seen in any of the ransom drop locations.

Catherine Cawood, in critical condition, dreams of young Becky pulling her to show her something beautiful and perfect while getting her spleen removed in the operating room.  Clare waits outside worried and clueless about the events that brought her sister near death when Catherine’s estranged son, Daniel, arrives troubled by the news of his mother’s critical condition.  Meanwhile, Ryan is called to the headmistress’ office to learn that he will be staying with his grandfather and his step-grandmother while his aunt stays in the hospital with his grandmother following an incident at work.

The police arrive at Ashley’s house to arrest him on suspicion of abduction and demanding money with menaces to the shock of his perplexed wife.  Later that evening, Tommy, Lewis, and Lewis’ friend watch the news identifying them as armed and dangerous criminals at large wanted in the murder of PC Kirsten McAskill, the attempted murder of Sgt. Catherine Cawood, and the abduction of Ann Gallagher.  Ann Gallagher finally arrives home suffering from withdrawal symptoms after being drugged by her abductors and asks to see Sgt. Cawood, and gets reassurance from her father that Clare will let them know when they can visit.  Meanwhile, Catherine regains consciousness after being unconscious for almost the entire day and learns from Clare that Ann Gallagher is alive and well due to her heroism leaving the Gallaghers grateful and indebted to her.  Detective Crabtree wastes no time speaking to Catherine and informs her of getting close to proving Ann Gallagher’s kidnappers also murdered PC McAskill confirming her suspicion through corroboration from Ann’s testimony and overwhelming evidence from the house where Ann was held captive.  Ashley, however, continues to deny everything from his white van being stolen to not knowing Tommy and Lewis, but his denial will prove fruitless due to strong evidence linking him to the kidnapping, and the discovery of a large amount of cannabis in one of his caravans.  Detective Crabtree, unfortunately, also had to deliver the regrettable news of Tommy Lee Royce’s escape leaving Catherine grief-stricken for having failed to capture her ultimate nemesis.

Ann visits Catherine at the hospital and reveals Tommy Lee Royce raped her.  It’s a fact she can’t let her terminally ill mother know, but one her father would need to know before it is revealed in court, and she would like Catherine to be the one to inform her father.  Weeks later, Catherine is back at home suffering from depression when she gets a visit from Mike Taylor who assures her the tabloids are mistaken about Tommy Lee Royce escaping to Spain, and updates her about the fate of the other kidnappers.  Kevin Weatherill has been badly sexually assaulted in prison, which required hospitalization, and Ashley Cowgill is expected to be approved bail possibly in exchange for information about the drug ring.  Mike also reveals Catherine’s nomination for the Queen’s Police Medal for bravery, news he and the District Commander thought would lift her spirits given the novelty of the award, but it does nothing for Catherine.  Mike realizes Tommy Lee Royce’s capture is the only news that could bring Catherine out of depression and offers optimism about his capture believing they will find him soon.  Mike’s visit did not lift Catherine’s spirits and appears to have done the opposite as she feels compelled to visit her daughter’s grave and feels guilty for her absence at Kirsten’s funeral despite her invalidity.

Jenny Weatherill visits her husband in prison and informs him of foregoing her visits if she can’t find someone to drive her there and of the hostile condemnation the family has received for Kevin’s crime causing her to move permanently with her father.  Kevin asks if Jenny’s father can drive her to prison, and learns the man doesn’t even want Jenny visiting him leading him to deny responsibility for his crimes rationalizing the circumstances had forced him to do the unthinkable.  Meanwhile, Tommy and Lewis are watching news of the public’s outcry for the police’s failure to catch them a month after the manhunt started when Lewis’ friend, Brett, who has been hiding them arrives to alert them of the house-to-house search of their building causing Lewis to panic.  Brett answers the police officer’s questions, while another police officer searches the small, filthy apartment, and doesn’t find anything because Lewis is hidden inside the couch Brett is atop and Tommy is hidden in the bathtub’s enclosure.  The police finally leave and Lewis emerges from inside the couch with a dislocated shoulder and a plea to his friend to snitch on Tommy Lee Royce, the person responsible for the murder of PC McAskill and the rape of Ann Gallagher.  Meanwhile, Ashley is released from prison having done a deal with the authorities and informs his furious wife of agreeing to go into a witness protection program hence upending their lives.

Catherine, finally finds the will to resume fetching Ryan from school and is once again called in for a conversation due to Ryan destroying a classmate’s painting.  Ryan is unremorseful and blames the incident on the classmate’s name-calling, which led to his destructive response.  Ryan’s disallowance upsets Catherine even more revealing her frustration with him for raising an impudent grandson despite her best nurturing efforts.  Grandmother and grandson arrive home furious at each other with Ryan threatening to run away and receiving the unexpected response from her grandmother who unleashes her regret at having taken him under her care.  Catherine bewails her decision of choosing Ryan over her marriage and reveals her deepest fear that Ryan is a psychopath just like his father making Clare upset at her contemptible sentiment.  Clare pacifies Ryan who has been thrashing his room, tells him of Catherine’s magnanimous love for him, asks for kindness towards his depressed grandmother, and denies Tommy’s paternity.

Catherine meets with Richard at a restaurant, and confides her regret of raising Ryan, and her exasperation with the child she has come to believe to be a psychopath like his father.  Richard disavows Catherine of her belief expressing his notion of the absence of a nurturing environment caused Tommy’s deviance, while Ryan is raised in a caring and stable environment through Catherine’s selfless stewardship.  Richard seems to have comforted Catherine until he reveals their meeting was due to Clare and Daniel’s concern for her mental health and further annoys her at the mention of her upcoming birthday celebration.  Catherine fails to see Clare’s well-intended reason to celebrate her birthday, and rants about the perverseness of a parent who has lost a child to celebrate their existence before walking out and insulting Richard with the payment of their meal.  She finds a place of solitude, and later receives a call from Phil Crabtree offering to meet for an update on the National Crime Agency’s investigation of Ashley Cowgill.  Phil divulges in confidence Ashley’s revelation of the importation of cocaine capitalizing on a legitimate pharmaceutical company’s supply chain where a drum of paracetamol is replaced with cocaine and imported to England, while the reverse process is executed in England.  Phil commends Catherine for facilitating the link to a team of drug dealers with a multi-million-pound distribution network in the UK leading to frozen assets for the drug lords, and possibly a death sentence for Ashley for snitching on them.  Phil’s news brought Catherine out of her depression, and the conversation with Richard seems to have gotten through her as well for she returns home remorseful for her rudeness to Clare and as a peace offering agrees to a birthday celebration with family and friends including the Gallaghers.  Catherine also renounces her belief that Ryan is a psychopath and reconciles with her grandson resuming her caring love for the troubled child.

Brett arrives at the apartment having spent the night at his girlfriend’s house, finds Tommy in the kitchen bleeding from a stab wound, informs Brett of Lewis’ attack, and refuses to come forward despite his fatal injury.  Tommy shows real emotion for the first time, crying at the thought of a child living with an old woman as though recalling a traumatic experience of his own.  Brett is in disbelief at Tommy’s decision to choose death over prison, and becomes upset with Lewis for attacking Tommy only to learn his throat has been slit causing Brett to have a panic attack.  Tommy strangles the terrified man and manages to wander Happy Valley in a simple disguise without being recognized.
