Episode 4 Season 1 Episode Summary: Sgt. Catherine Cawood reports probable criminal activity in the house where Tommy Lee Royce was last seen thereby initiating a criminal investigation.  Her concern for Helen Gallagher leads to the woman revealing the kidnapping of her daughter, Ann Gallagher, resulting in the Gallaghers’ cooperation with the police to find their missing daughter.  Meanwhile, Catherine becomes agitated at learning Tommy Lee Royce’s discovery of his paternity to her grandson, Ryan, and her determination to belie Tommy’s paternity inadvertently leads her to a shocking discovery.

Happy Valley Recap of Episode 4 Season 1: Sergeant Catherine Cawood rushes back to the police station, reports to her superior, Inspector Mike Taylor, her questionable discovery of probable criminal activity in the house where Tommy Lee Royce was last seen and is surprised and relieved when her request for a forensic investigation goes uncontested.  She instructs PC Shafiq Shah to put a request in for a CSI to meet them at the house with suspicious activity and directs him to prepare the house for investigation while she speaks to the registered owner of the property.  Meanwhile, Kevin Weatherill anxiously practices for his conversation with Nevison Gallagher and decides to inform him of the identity of the kidnappers, but becomes tongue-tied the moment he begins to say what he really wants to share.

Sgt. Cawood speaks with Julie Cowgill, the registered owner of the house under investigation, who confesses to only being the owner in name for tax reasons, and defers Sgt. Cawood to her husband, Ashley Cowgill.  Julie calls her husband as soon as Sgt. Cawood leaves her salon, annoyed at learning Ashley may be involved in illegal activity, unaware of the various crimes he is entangled with, and informs him of the police finding signs of habitation in their supposedly vacant property.  Ashley instructs Lewis Whippey for him, Tommy Lee Royce, and Ann Gallagher to stay silent in the caravan while he deals with the policewoman who will be arriving soon, assuring nervous Lewis the police hasn’t uncovered the crimes they have committed knowing only one police officer will be visiting.  Lewis arrives at the caravan to impart his conversation with Ashley, and finds keeping silent won’t be an issue with Ann for Tommy has drugged her almost to unconsciousness.

Catherine receives a call from Richard who she has obliged into writing a substantial story on the drug situation in the region known as Happy Valley and learns of the drug dealers’ dilution of heroin with harmful additives to maximize profit leaving unsuspecting customers ingesting the dangerously addictive drug along with other toxic substances that block their veins.  Richard’s research also revealed the constant fear from every level of the well-organized drug network run by reputable individuals with respectable businesses who instill fear and greed in their subordinates.

Sgt. Cawood ceremoniously wears her police helmet almost menacingly in front of Ashley Cowgill and informs him of an intruder in his property given he and his wife attest of its vacancy and the police’s current investigation of violent captivity in the premises.  She enumerates the names of recently released prisoners including Tommy Lee Royce to determine if Ashley has come across or employed any of the ex-convicts, and Ashley denies knowing any of them or employing anyone around their age.  The absence of new information about Tommy from her interview with Ashley compels Catherine to visit Tommy’s mother, Lynn Dewhurst, hoping to learn of the elusive ex-convict’s whereabouts, but Lynn was not any help either for the woman has not seen her son since the one night he stayed at her house after his release from prison.  Catherine leaves her calling card with Lynn with instructions of informing Tommy to see her despite the woman’s doubts of her son returning home, and in spite of Lynn’s inebriation, she somehow manages to recognize Catherine as the grandmother of Tommy’s son, Ryan.  The recognition of Ryan being Tommy’s son terrifies and upsets Catherine who denies Tommy as the father of her grandson, and triggers another hallucination of the morbid corpse of her daughter piercing through her tough exterior leaving her frightened and in tears.  She composes herself, meets PC Shah at the crime scene who informs her of a neighbor’s report of seeing a white transit van parked outside the property, and decides to flag the information to the serious crime unit despite the ubiquity of the vehicle in case a search of CCTV footage reveals a connection to the murder of PC McAskill.

Ashley speaks to Tommy and Lewis about killing Ann to which Lewis is absolutely against doing and suggests Ashley ask help from his superiors to get them out of their dilemma, but seeking the help of drug lords is impossible for their careless moonlighting that has attracted the attention of the police would definitely mean death at the hands of the drug lords for Ashley.  Tommy, however, has no qualms about killing Ann and only asks for money from both Lewis and Ashley to accomplish the task leading Ashley to pass on the heinous crime to Tommy who along with Lewis he has instructed to disappear after the deed is done upsetting Lewis for having lost his livelihood to a crime he was reluctant to commit.

Catherine arrives with Ryan at the mission after Clare informed her earlier that afternoon of Helen Gallagher’s arrival.  She introduces herself to Helen and bluntly asks the woman if her husband is abusing her after alluding to her husband’s presence as the reason for her reticence.  Helen assures Catherine her husband is not abusing her, and just as Catherine is walking away convinced of the woman’s statement and as Clare has arrived with tea, Helen blurts her daughter has been kidnapped.  Helen divulges the details of her family’s ordeal, and her husband’s decision to adhere to the kidnapper’s demands believing they will return Ann to them after paying the ransom.  Helen truthfully answers Catherine’s questions revealing Ann was abducted on her way to see her dentist, has been missing for four nights, and Nev has been paying the kidnappers’ ransom.  Helen begs Catherine not to report the kidnapping to the police only Catherine is the police who is also obliged to report the crime, and firmly believes a tragic outcome without police involvement, which is a belief Helen shares leading her to approve of Catherine reporting the crime even though she finds her actions a betrayal of her husband.  Catherine immediately calls the National Crime Agency and demands to speak to the detective superintendent revealing an active kidnapping leading the agency to send Detective Inspector Phil Crabtree to meet them without delay.

Detective Crabtree learns Helen knows little of the kidnapping for it is her husband who has been dealing with the abductors and placates Nev into cooperating with the rationale of the kidnappers’ desperation leading to the worse outcome given Ann’s knowledge of her captors after spending four days with them.  Detective Crabtree interviews Nev to uncover information about the kidnappers, and learns the same man always calls Nev at random times of the day with the most recent call that morning when the kidnapper provided instructions for the last ransom payment including its amount and location of the drop.  The detective also uncovers the kidnapper Nev has been in touch with is local given his accent, believes himself to be helping Nev deal with the other kidnappers, detaches himself from them, and speaks to Nev with some familiarity.  The interview also revealed the kidnappers explicitly asked for Nev’s accountant, Kevin Weatherill, to deliver the money, and Nev attributes their choice to Kevin’s cowardly nature making him easy prey.  Detective Crabtree’s line of reasoning, however, uncovers details Nev has not found suspicious before and begins to ponder the kidnappers’ demand to have Kevin make the drop unaware the mention of Kevin’s name has alarmed Sgt. Cawood as well though she has kept silent the entire interview.

Tommy arrives at her mother’s house, offers her mother money in return for the use of her cellar ostensibly to keep a fighting dog, warns her of noises it might make, and orders her not to visit the cellar for her safety.  Lynn conveys Catherine’s message to him but overlooks her unequivocal demand to forget about Ryan leading her to inform her son of Becky Cawood giving birth to a son before her death surprising Tommy for he was unaware of Becky’s passing or her having a child.  Moreover, Lynn reveals Ryan is living with Catherine and directly asks Tommy if the child is his after hearing rumors from other addicts that it might be so thereby putting a smile on Tommy’s face.

Detective Crabtree ends the interview, informs the Gallaghers of sending undercover officers to their house and office, and instructs them to stall the kidnappers should they receive a call from them before they have set up their operation.  Nev is supposed to act like everything is normal, agree to the kidnappers’ demands, and keep secret the police involvement even from Kevin who Detective Crabtree will be treating as a suspect.  Detective Crabtree sends the Gallaghers home and speaks to Catherine privately with the grim prognosis that Ann may already be dead despite the proof of life Nev showed them given the absence of contact from the kidnappers, and their decision not to ask for more money.  Catherine informs Phil of Kevin’s agitated visit to the police station four days ago where he ended up leaving without imparting the information he clearly wanted to share but could not bring himself to do, which increases suspicion on him and leads Phil to have him watched immediately.  Their conversation reveals Phil and Catherine know each other with Phil showing a hint of affection towards her, and that Catherine had once been on a path to becoming a detective, which was derailed by the death of her daughter and the raising of her grandson.

Ryan is playing football outside their house as Clare watches over when Richard arrives most likely to see Catherine, but upon learning she’s not home begins to claim he has come to play football with his grandson.  His visit is fortuitous as Catherine had just called to ask Clare to fetch her at Sowerby Bridge where she was left without a car after letting the Gallaghers return home and prepare for surveillance.  Clare arrives to fetch Catherine and surprises her with news of Richard babysitting Ryan, but Catherine has a surprise of her own and reveals Tommy Lee Royce’s mother knows Ryan is Tommy’s son.

Jenny Weatherill is watching the news honoring the fallen PC Kirsten McAskill disturbing Kevin enough to discuss with his wife a plan to snitch on Ashley to Nevison and feigning ignorance of the kidnapping, but Jenny is against the plan knowing her husband will lose his nerve.  Kevin reveals Ashley’s men murdered PC McAskill after she had pulled the van carrying Ann over, necessitating the need to distance himself from the kidnapping.  Jenny is shocked at the new piece of information, insolently tells her husband to confess to instigating the kidnapping but not the murder of the policewoman, and has become frustrated with her husband for entangling them in a crime.  Kevin, however, continues to blame Nevison for driving him to commit a crime and refuses to come out clean and take responsibility.

Tommy Lee Royce arrives at his mother’s house and finds her passed out on the couch allowing him to hide Ann wrapped in a sleeping bag in the cellar unnoticed.  Tommy talks to a heavily intoxicated Ann of having been instructed to kill her reveals his plans to keep her for his enjoyment before doing so, and even speaks to her of the inexplicable emotion he felt at learning he has an eight-year-old son.

Sgt. Cawood is at the precinct and complains to Inspector Taylor after discovering the cocaine she found in Councilman Marcus Gascoigne’s possession has been found damaged thereby making it unusable evidence.  She reveals her incredulity stems from her refusal to obey the district commander’s request for her to drop the case against the councilman, and remove the incriminating evidence.  Inspector Taylor, though disturbed at the district commander’s request, recommends the reluctant Sgt. Cawood acquiesce, reminding her about him turning a blind eye when she illegally entered the house which revealed probable criminal activity.

Catherine fetches Ryan at his school unaware Tommy Lee Royce is watching them expectantly as he waits to uncover the identity of his son.  He follows them and approaches Catherine, putting her in a panic and causing her to keep Ryan from Tommy and quickly takes control of the situation by interrogating the ex-convict about his whereabouts, especially the house where criminal activity has been discovered.  Tommy, however, turns the tables at the mention of Becky, his relationship with her, and recognizing Ryan as his son, leading Catherine to manhandle and threaten him but despite her best efforts, Tommy manages to reveal his paternity to Ryan.  Catherine quickly drives away and tries to convince Ryan that Tommy is just a deranged addict and not his father, but she is uncertain if her grandson bought her story.  Distressed, she confides the incident to her sister and discusses the consequences of Tommy’s discovery and the unfathomable possibility of Tommy taking custody of his son given his exoneration from the rape of Ryan’s mother.  Their conversation leads Clare to associate the criminal activity in the house Tommy was seen entering with the kidnapping of Ann Gallagher.  Clare becomes hopeful the police will arrest him, but Catherine knows the police’s strategy will be to follow Tommy and she doubts they will find him.  Catherine remains incredulous at Clare’s theory but decides to inform Detective Crabtree nonetheless.

The following morning Nevison Gallagher calls Detective Crabtree the moment he heard the news of the police looking for a yellow Mini in connection to the murder of PC McAskill, revealing Ann was driving a yellow Mini when she disappeared.  He arrives at his office and finds Kevin waiting for him because the man has decided to proceed with revealing possibly knowing the identity of the kidnappers.  Meanwhile, Catherine still agitated at Tommy’s discovery drops by Lynn’s house before going to work to insist to Tommy’s mother that Ryan is not Tommy’s son and to relay a threat if Tommy goes near her grandson.  In spite of her annoyance, Sgt. Cawood becomes concerned at the bruise on Lynn’s face knowing very well Lynn received it from Tommy, but the mother refuses to press charges and inadvertently reveals his son has been keeping a supposed dog in her cellar; one she’s not allowed to see.  This revelation raises suspicion causing Sgt. Cawood to break into the locked cellar finds gagged and restrained to a chair, Ann Gallagher, who frantically demands her freedom at the sight of the policewoman.  Tommy Lee Royce arrives at the house just as Sgt. Cawood is removing Ann’s restraints and begins attacking the policewoman, but Tommy overpowers her and brutalizes Sgt. Cawood.  Fortunately, Ann manages to remove the remaining restraints and has the presence of mind to attack Tommy allowing Sgt. Cawood to spray him with CS gas temporarily incapacitating the kidnapper and rapist giving the two women time to escape.  Ann drags the severely wounded Sgt. Cawood out of the cellar and into the street where the policewoman finds strength to put Ann safely inside the police car and send a distress call before passing out on the street in front of Ann who pleads for the policewoman to get herself safely inside the car.
